Everything in nature is based on the sphere, the cone, the cylinder.
Paul Cézanne, 1904
The collective exhibition Abstract nature brings together works by contemporary European, North American and Latin American artists. Within this diverse selection of works by artists with varied backgrounds, two distinct yet interconnected statements emerge. They function as subtle harmonizers, invoking the tradition of nature as a model in abstract art and art as the nature of abstraction.
In some of the exhibited works, abstract forms derived from nature undergo a transformation into highly ambiguous visual elements, where the original model seems to disappear. Others serve as examples in which the developed forms exist solely on the surface of the artwork.
Finally, there are works that inhabit an uncertain space between the two previous categories. Here, the nature initially used as a model is a result of the intervention and action of the culture and of human nature itself.
In essence, this exhibition serves as an illustration of the profound ambiguity that dominates the images and representations produced in contemporary art.
