Karishma D’Souza’s recent works are included in a duo show Whole Rivers of Light at O Gabinete de Madame Thao in Lisbon, Portugal.
The exhibition invites the viewer to embark on a poetic journey through hidden narratives embedded in cultural landscapes and to reflect on how these have shaped generations of people who inhabit them.
The show features Karishma’s intimate and metaphorically vibrant works on paper and canvas, which hold the memory of family and texts, creating a dialogue between their distinct perspectives. Drawing from her personal history, family memories, myths and the violent political events that have shaken her homeland, Goa, India, her lyrical artworks create an intimate, metaphorical space. Here, the individual experience of the harsh realities surrounding the political notion of citizenship and the struggles that shape India’s caste-divided society are transformed into poetic landscapes.
