José Gamarra has been honored with the Figari Prize 2024, the most prestigious award for an artist’s lifetime achievement in Uruguay. Gamarra is known for his versatile artistic journey, which spans abstraction, pop art influences, and a figurative language rich in symbolism and color. After representing Uruguay at the 1964 Venice Biennale, he settled in Paris, where his work became part of prestigious international collections.
Throughout his career, Gamarra has continually sought new forms of expression, balancing formal exploration with a deep humanistic commitment. His retrospective exhibition, curated by Manuel Neves, showcases the key stages of his creative evolution, focusing on his meticulous technique and vibrant use of color.
The award ceremony and exhibition opening will take place on December 20th at 7 p.m. at the Figari Museum. This event, open to the public, will celebrate Gamarra’s exceptional legacy as a pioneer of contemporary art in Uruguay.
