A selection of four works by Vik Muniz is included in the group show ” I Follow the Sun” at Artipelag in Sweden.
The exhibition examines the history of the sunflower from an international perspective through painting, sculpture, and photography. Since the early 17th century, the sunflower has been a dense symbol and a dynamic motif for numerous artists – and still is today in the diverse forms of contemporary art.
The sunflowers motif attained iconic status with Vincent van Gogh’s still life from 1888–1889. In the selected works, Vik Muniz pays an homage to this artist : After Van Gogh (Pictures of Color) (2001), Irises, After Van Gogh (Pictures of Magazine, Still Life) (2004), Wheat Field with Cypresses, After Van Gogh (Pictures of Magazine) (2011), Portrait of Adeline Ravoux, After Van Gogh (Pictures of Magazine 2) (2012).
